Day 41

Wow! I can not believe that today was my last day at the Clery Center. It is going to be so weird not having to go into the office three times a week. I have really enjoyed my experience here. It has definitely been a learning one, if anything else. I entered this internship not knowing how I would feel. Thinking that what ever the experience would be I was open to it, especially because I was new to the whole non-profit area.
Never did I think that I would possibly want to work in a non-profit organization. This experience has truly opened my eyes to a whole new area of psychology that I could go into that I never thought to consider before. They were so accommodating to my school schedule. If for any reason my schedule conflicted with something that had to be done with school they would work with me and make sure that there was a way for me to make up the hours. Which was just truly amazing, not even my job at Barnes and Noble is that accommodating.
So today as my last official project as an intern. Since Michelle is going to edit the video that we made yesterday because I do not have Imovie on my computer. They wanted me to write a little manual I guess you could call it. For how to use the Safe Campus, Strong Voices logo during National Campus Safety Awareness Month (NCSAM).

I have truely enjoyed this experience and being a part of the Clery Team. I hope that one day I am able to work with these wonderful people once again.

Day 40

Today when I walked in the Clery Center, Michelle and I worked on creating a bystander intervention video. It was toward Healthy Relationships. We are creating this for National Campus Safety Awareness Month (NCSAM.) We talked about what a healthy relationship meant to us. We are going to put it together tomorrow. We were only in for a short time due to the end of the semester, so we were not able to get a whole lot of it done. Since we were only there for about 2 hours. The finished product should be amazing!!!

Day 38

Today is one of my last days at the Clery Center. I can not believe that the time has gone by so fast. I only have 9 more hours left after I leave today. So when I came in today there was not too much to do. I mostly sealed envelopes because the newsletter is being sent out this week. So I continued what Jessica and I were doing yesterday. Although instead of stamping & sealing the letters. Charlotte was able to get the stamping done, that way all I had to do was seal them. Usually I am busy doing research for an RA board or looking up materials that need to be used in a project.
So even though these past two days I have not been doing  a whole lot I have enjoyed it. It has been one of those weeks where you want work to do, but you want to not be able to think about what it is you are doing. With finals week coming up these past two days were exactly what I needed.
Also before I left we are still working on getting our organization sign-up's for NCSAm to 200. So in addition to sealing the envelopes I was also looking for more student/peer education groups that might be interested in participating this year.

Day 37

Today when I went in to the Clery Center, Abby and Amy had another intern and I work together I on getting the newsletter ready to be sent out. Due to being done our research for Experimental Psychology and my Capstone class, we had presentations this week. So I was only able to stay for an hour and a half.
So the other intern Jessica and myself worked on stuffing and stamping the envelopes for the newsletter. We got most of it done except we ran out of stamps. Since I had to leave early I told Jess that she could just continue stuffing the envelopes and when  came in tomorrow I would stamp them and seal them.  Not a very eventful day, but otherwise productive.

Day 36

Today when I walked into the Clery Center I was planning on reading through the 30days/30 activities guide that Abby brought to my attention yesterday. Since I was not able to read through all thirty activities that it what I did. I spent the two hours that I was there today reading through all of the different activities and gave my feedback.
They said that it was crucial that they had a students perspective since that was their main target audience. Since I am currently a student they felt that I would be able to give them a good idea on whether these ideas would work, or if there was another way to carry them out. Maybe even add some new ideas to the list. I really enjoyed this project. I felt that I was having a hands on part of creating NCSAM. Even though I have been helping them out since the beginning of the semester. Makes sense though since I love reading and I am going to need to be good at picking out certain things that stand out. Especially when I get out into the professional world.

Day 35

Today when I walked into the Clery Center...I finished up my part of the letter that was going to be attached to the 30 day/ 30 activities part of the NCSAM toolkit. Then I sent it over to Amy to read it over and to make sure that tomorrow when Michelle comes in she is able to write her part.
Then I went and finished up the Email blast that was going to be sent out to the student organizations on the student group list that we had gotten together and still working on. As I mentioned before they are really pushing to have and get 200 organizations to become apart of National Campus Safety Awareness Month (NCSAM.)
Once all that was done and set over to Amy, Abby came in and we talked and she said that both her and Amy thought that it would be a great idea for me to read over the 30 days/ 30 activities part of the NCSAM toolkit, to see if there was anything else that could be done. Mostly to get a students opinion on the whole thing. To make sure that the students who would be participating would want to do these activities.

Day 34

Today when I went in the Clery Center Amy was all set with a project for me to do. She wanted to me finish writing the letter for the email blast to those who only have an email contact on the Student Group List. I finished that in record time, there was only a little bit left from yesterday that I needed to get in to the letter.
Then she wanted me to start a letter to the students that would be part of the 30 days/ 30 activities for National Campus Safety Awareness Month (NCSAM), as part of the list that Michelle and I created last week. They liked it so much that they wanted to attach this letter written by the both of us with the different ways that students can promote their events.
Lastly a little bit before I had to leave I had some free time. I was able to get a few more calls in from the student group lists. No one answered, but I was able to leave them short but detailed messages. All in all another busy and productive day.

Day 33

Today when I went into the Clery Center there was a meeting going on in the conference room. So when the other interns came in we were a little short on space for everyone..haha. So one of the interns Michelle and I ended up working in the same room. Which was a good thing because we have been working on some of the same projects. It gave us some time to collaborate a little together. Since we do not usually have the same schedule.
The other two interns Charlotte and Christine were working out in the main room, where Charlotte usually answers the phones and such. There is a desk out there that they could both share and get their work done. Luckily Christine and Michelle both brought their laptops.
For the most part today I worked on an email that was going to be sent out to those who are on the student group list that only have an email listed as their contact. So we can send out another email blast to all those organizations and reach our goal of 200. Michelle and I also came up with a list of different types of promotions that student organizations use to bring awareness and get students to attend their events. All the while searching for pictures that Amy could use in the 30 days/ 30 activities aspect of the National Campus Safety Awareness Month (NCSAM). Was a very busy day today.

Day 32

Today when I walked in to the Clery Center I put the finishing touches on the Bystander RA board that I was working on. Then I sent it to both Amy and Abby to look over one last time just in case any changes or additions need to be made. Went and looked for more pictures for the 30 days/ 30 activities event for NCSAM. I have not been able to to find many, Then I went and started making phone calls from the Student Group list that Amy and I have been working on these past couple of weeks.  I was able to make two calls from this list before it was time to go. I am going to continue making calls tomorrow and making more additions to the list.

Day 31

Today when I walked into the Clery Center Amy was not in the office. She sent me an email earlier that day that I did not receive until checking my email, when I got into the office. The email saying that she was suffering from a horrible migraine and would most likely not make it into the office today.
But that I was either welcome to continue working on the student group list, start making phone calls from the student group list to the new organizations that were added,  or continue to look for photo's for the 30 Activities for 30 days for NCSAM.
So I did a little bit of everything except for making the phone calls. It has been a little while since I made the previous ones, from when we first started making the list. I wanted to wait until either Amy or Abbey were in the office, just in case I had any questions.

Thursday, April 4, 2013

Day 30

Today I was not able to make it to the Clery Center.  I was having some car trouble and was not able to make it in to the office. However, I did call the office and spoke with one of my supervisors Amy. I asked her if there was anything that I could do from home that way I would not be loosing any hours and that work that needed to get done would be done. She said that she was sorry about my car and that they completely understand that these things do happen and not to worry about not be able to come into the office.
That I was to continue adding student organizations to the student group list for NCSAM and that when I was back in the office we would start making calls. I felt really bad because we were supposed to start making the calls today but because of my car we were not able to. She also gave me the option of helping her with another NCSAM project. She is working on the 30 days/ 30 activities campaign and she wanted to have pictures that went along with the text so it would not be so wordy. She said that if I needed a break from working on the list that I could switch gears and work on that.
I ended up finding a few more organizations and the pictures are taking a little bit more time than expected. The topics that I am searching are hard to find. But overall for not being able to get into the office it was a productive day

Day 29

Today when I went into the Clery Center, my main focus was to add more organizations to the student group list. Amy, Abby, Sam, Deb, and Ali all had a meeting today.  So I was to man the phones while they were in the meeting. Charlotte the other intern who is usually the one that answers the phones had already left for the day. I have to say I was a little nervous, because I was unfamiliar with the phone system and I was not sure how to do a couple of things.
However everyone had complete faith in me. They said that if I was to make a mistake that was ok, because being an intern is supposed to be a learning experience. It turns out I did not make any mistakes and took great messages.
Which made me confident in myself, because even though I was only answering the phones at this particular point something like this will follow me through all my professional endeavors. There are going to be those times where I am going to be pushed out of my comfort zone and I am gonna have to go with it to make sure that the job gets completed.
So I was able to get a few more organizations added to the list and I am going to start making more calls either tomorrow or next week. Depending on what Amy and Abby think would be best.

Day 27

Today when I walked into the Clery Center we were supposed to all meet and go over the list of the organizations that we found for PACT5.  Michelle came in around two. What Amy and I had discussed the other day was that in addition to the list we needed to have mini descriptions about what the website was about. That way when people are search for resources on certain topics using the PACT5 website they have an idea if the website is what they are looking for, or will provide them with the help that they need.  So before our meeting that was what Michelle and I did, we spent over an hour working together typing up all these mini descriptions, which was very hard. Especially because most of the websites had their own little diddy about what they were all about and what they did. We could not copy them of course. So we had to be creative and find ways to simplify something that was already simplified.
I had to leave before the meeting started, but made sure that all the materials that Michelle would need were there for the meeting. I'm really excited about this PACT5 collaboration. I feel that this is a good way to network with other non-profit organizations that could be helpful to me in the future.

Day 26

Today when I walked into the Clery Center, there was a film crew in the office. They were filming a documentary and needed to interview Abby and a couple of other people in the office. So it was really cool getting to see a film crew. That never happens. While the film crew was interviewing and talking to Abby, I went and spoke with Amy. We were all going to get together and talk about the resource list for PACT5. Unfortunately it was only Amy and I that were able to meet and go over the list. The film crew kept Abby so busy that she was not able to meet with us.
However, we all plan on meeting tomorrow and discussing what is going to come next. Do Michelle and I need to find more websites? Are there any that we might have missed? Those kind of details. All in all today went very well and very fast.

Day 25

Today when I walked into the Clery Center, another intern was using the computer that I needed. Due to anther intern having to come in about a half an hour after I did, essentially all computers were taken. Luckily Jessica had her laptop and moving to another room was not a problem. Although before she did Amy had her help me with a few things first. She showed me how to do a couple of things on InDesign, this is a program to create professional looking documents. It is used a lot of Mac computers. Since I do not have a Mac I am not very familiar with this program. Jess Showed me how to create text boxes, change background colors, how to layer the boxes, change the dimensions of the document, etc. I am very grateful for that, now I feel much more comfortable using InDesign.
After that she moved into the next room and I got back to work on the Resource list for the PACT5 organization. We are in charge of helping them with their website and we need to have the list done and in Abby's hands by tomorrow. That way she can look over it and we have enough time to make any needed changes before we send them the list. I want to have as many resources that we can get before we hand the list over. So far we have over five pages which in my opinion is very good. I feel that this will help me in my professional career path because this is helping me to make great connections for future job endeavors.

Day 24

Today when I went into the Clery Center, we needed to get this resource list done. Michelle had previously emailed me her part of the list. I was able to get them onto one master list, however there were no descriptions at all about the websites yet. Except for the few that I did the other day.  So the biggest thing that Michelle and I worked on when she came in today was getting all the descriptions done so we could meet with Amy and Abby. Then get this list sent off to PACT5.
By the time I left there were still a few more left that needed to be done, but Michelle said that she would handle it and make sure that it would get all done. That way we would be able to meet with Abby and Amy next week altogether. I was also working on an email that was going to be sent out to all of the organizations on the student group list for those who only had an email as a form of contact. Good, fun, and productive day!

Day 23

Today when I went into the Clery Center, the PACT5 resource list still needed to be worked. Amy needs it soon, so I am trying really hard to get it finished ASAP. Michelle and I have been working really hard on getting a good list together. I know that it is stressful now, but in the end everything will turn out great and looking good. I worked on getting the descriptions for the websites done.
Then I worked along side that was the RA board. It should be done by tomorrow. All I have to do is add some more pictures and then I shall be able to send it off.

Day 22

Today when I walked into the Clery Center there was not much on the To Do List. The things that I am working on are the PACT5 resource list and adding any finishing touches on the RA Board materials. I am getting a good list together, but the descriptions are the hard part. Knowing what to say is hard because there is so much information that you are not sure what to keep and what to take out. Michelle another intern is also working on this project with me. We have been working really well together as a team.
If I see something that I know is good for what she is working on I will send it to her and vice versa. I am looking forward to seeing what the completed list is going ot look like. I hope that PACT5 is happy with what we come up with. We are all working really hard to find them good websites to use as resource tools. I think that if we did not have a deadline we could work on finding these resources forever. Whenever you spot a site, there is always five more on their resource page and the cycle just continues.

Day 21

Today when I walked into the Clery Center Michelle (another intern), Abby, Amy, and myself had a meeting. Abby had gotten a call and spoke to a member of the PACT5 organization. They are trying to get more well known and develop a website. That is where we all come in. After the phone call Abby wanted us all to meet so that she could go over it with us. They wanted us to be in charge of helping to create their website. They are putting the interns (Michelle and myself) on the resource page.
Meaning when a person goes to the resource page it is to lead them in the right direction of getting more information on a particular subject. It will have local and national organizations, as well resources on college campuses so students will know what to do and where to go if they witness or end up in a sexual violent situation. All they have to do is go to the PACT5 website and they will be able to find this information.
To be apart of helping out such an important organization get started is great experience and knowing that I helped to create and launch their website will be a great addition to my resume. This is a great way for me to become familiar with all of the organizations that are involved with helping to prevent and end sexual violence, on and off college campuses.

Day 20

When I got into the Clery Center, I was working on the last final touches of my RA bystander intervention board. I have been working really hard on it and enjoying putting it together. As I am working on it Abby comes into the room and lets me know that she is going to be sitting in on a Webinar. Which is like a regular seminar except that only the people who are presenting are in the same room. All the other organizations are following along online in their offices.
How it goes is everyone at a specific times calls in the people who are presenting are on speaker phone I guess. Then that way everyone is able to listen on the phone and follow along with the presentation at the same time. I had never seen one of these before so Abby when she came into the room she asked me if I wanted to sit in and listen. Of course I said yes, because every opportunity is a learning one I always say. Also I was kind of curious as to how it was going to go because a friend of mine said that she was going on a webinar interview and I was like "whats that?" Now I know that everyone just calls in and answers the interview questions.  I also think that a video chat is set up as well for the interview type webinar.
Anyway the Webinar that I was sitting in on talked about Sexual Harassment/ Misconduct. How to handle it in school situations. There were three different speakers two men and a woman. Title IX was brought up, as well as how to create a good team for the school to deal with these situations. It was very fascinating to listen to and learning all sorts of good information..
After that I went back to working on the RA board and they had me look through a list of the people who we sent the Constant Contact email blast a few weeks ago and see who did and did not get the email. That the ones that I circled we needed to get in contact with another way.

Day 19

Today when I walked into the Clery Center I was scheduled to have a meeting with Abby and Amy. They sent me some feedback on the RA Board Materials that I was working on and they said that I was doing a good job, but that they wanted to make it more community friendly. Not just statistic after statistic that could scare people from reading it. We wanted to make it so that there were not a lot of words on the slides, more pictures and more of informing, not telling them don't do this or don't do that.
So when it came time for the meeting Amy and I had already kind of discussed a plan of action. That we wanted to inform Abby about. We were really excited about it and could not wait to explain it to her. When we explained to her our new idea she loved it. We were gonna have the slides be put in bubbles and then the upper bodies of two people. It was going to be a boy and a girl speaking. That way when people passed by the board it looked like something cool to read. Not to mention that this idea worked better with trying to promote NCSAM and it's events.
We also decided that I would not just be making the NCSAM board, but other boards as well. With topics surrounding NCSAM, things like bystander non-intervention, domestic violence, relationships, drugs, etc. At first I was really nervous because I did not think that I would be able to handle it. Then I realized that in the work place there are going to be many more times where I am going to feel that exact same way. Nervous or scared and still have to do what is asked of me by my employer or even with certain situations with patients. This is a great opportunity for me to overcome that fear now when I can get assistance if needed, then after graduation when that might not always be the case.

~Kaitlan

Day 18

Today when I walked into the Clery Center I thought I would switch gears a little bit. Since I have a meeting tomorrow with Abby and Amy to go over the NCSAM RA board that I was working on I figured that I would take a break and work on another project. This other project is another RA board, but it is more focused on another subject. When I talked to Abby and Amy last week they wanted to me to do more boards towards other subjects that were involved with what NCSAM was promoting, but since its not just focused on sexual violence this year I can go more broad with the other board topics.
So I talked it over with both Abby and Amy, we thought that the next board that I should be working on is one for bystanders. Channeling it to focus more on being an active bystander instead of talking about bystander non-intervention. We want to make people feel good about helping, not that they were doing something wrong by not helping. Sometimes when in certain situations people A.) do not know what to do,  OR B.) Are to afraid to act, for whatever their reasons.
I spent the my time today gathering materials and looking at other boards to get some ideas as to how I would want this one to look.

~Kaitlan

Wednesday, March 6, 2013

Day 17

Today when I got to the Clery Center and checked my email there was already feedback from Abby. She had a lot of good points. She said that we should add some colors. Maybe even the Safe Campus, Strong Voices colors. That way the whole thing would not just be white. Making it more pleasing to the eye. I left it white because I was thinking that wold allow what ever school that it was going to be used at to add their own colors or pizzazz. She also said that I should use the pictures that have been taken by the Clery center, That way we would be using a lot of our own material. But that if the school did not want to use our pictures they were there as more of a guideline and did not have to be used.
So I spent the rest of the time I had making all the corrections and finding some good pictures to add. Tying to figure out some good colors to use. Also amy and I had come up with a good plan that we wanted to discuss with Abby once she came back from her business trip. That might also be a good addition to the board/powerpoint.

Day 16

Today when I went into the Clery Center I was able to get to work and finish the RA board for NCSAM now that they annual report is done and being sent out. It was a pretty slow day considering how it was last week. With the annual report needing to get finished. With it being spring break and all I worked a lot more on the RA board. Finished what I could and then sent it to both Abby and Amy for feedback. They usually get back to me quickly, hopefully not a lot of changes need to be made.

Day 15

Today when I went into the Clery Center, I went straight to work on gathering more information on the RA boards. However, I was not able to work on that for long because today was the day that the Annual Report had to be put together. So everyone was in the board room stuffing, gluing, and stamping all the envelopes that needed to be sent out. These letters were being sent to donors, sponsors, board member, etc to keep them up to date with what had been going on the past few months at the Clery Center.
So I was only able to work on my RA board materials for NCSAM for about an hour and half. The rest of the time was taken up in the board room getting the annual report ready. It was really nice having everyone in the same room. We all get along pretty well, but since everyone has their own work space we do not really get to chat and get to know one another. So it was a good bonding experience I think for everyone. Although I do not think anyone would have thought of it as a bonding experience because of what they were doing. But none the less it was nice working with everyone at the same time.

Day 14

Today when I walked into the Clery Center I spoke with Abby and Amy. They wanted to me take lead on creating materials for an RA Board in college dorms. To help raise awareness and promote National Campus Safety Awareness Month. While also giving them tips and facts about what happens on campuses and how acts of violence can occur, even though you may not think that it could never happen to you. I find it very interesting because in all of my years living in the dorms I always saw the RA boards and I just thought that most of the time they made them up themselves. It did not occur to me that they might have taken ideas from another program that was created or from an established organization.
So I spent the day working on gathering the materials that I would need to put in the PowerPoint presentation that I was creating. That way when RA's open it up all the materials will be available to do them. The board will already be set up for them, all they would have to do is print out the slides and arrange them on the board how they saw fit. I feel that this will be beneficial to me because this is just one of the many ways to reach and help students. Even if it is not directly communicating with them and handing them the information. One single student may see a statistic or a tip to help get out of violent or uncomfortable situation on this RA board and it could save their life. If I can help reach one person/ student that's more then I could even do in a lifetime.

Day 13

Today was a very short day it seemed. I was not there any less time than usual, but it was just one of those days where you are just working on something and the time just seems to fly by. They had me work on creating flyers for the Clery Act Seminars that they have throughout the year. People can sign up and go to them. My part was creating the flyers for the different cities, changing the dates and the times if they were different from last years.
Once I was done creating those flyers Amy had me watch a video that was created by the organization PAVE (prevention, awareness, victim, empowerment). It dealt with sexual assault. It was about these three girls who had been sexually assaulted and how their life was after it happened. They talked about the experience and what happened.
Then it went on to the things that they did not do that they should have done. Like called the police, told someone, not showered, and gone to the hospital. They went on to say how their life was changed by the experience and what they and their family and friends went through after the assault happened. At first it was a really sad video but as the video went on and showed how the girls were able to move forward in their lives and over come what happened to them through the help of family and friends it became empowering. Making me realize that being able to help people was why I wanted to be a psychology.

Day 12

Today at the Clery Center there was a board meeting in the office. So there was not a lot of space for all of us to work. Usually I work in the office on the computer. Sometimes I bring my laptop to do work, but it is easier for me to work on their computer because I have a regular PC and they have a MAC. So I would rather just get all my work done in one place and not have to worry about it not being compatible with their office computer and it not working. One of the other interns who usually brings her laptop was in a huge rush this morning so she forgot to bring it and was working on the office computer when I walked in, so I went and spoke with Amy to see what she wanted us to do.
Michelle and I ended up working on the press release. Rewording, changing things and adding needed information. It took the whole 3.5 hours that we were there, but we finally got it done. We emailed it to both Amy and Abby to look it over to see if there was anything else that needed to be added. They also asked us while we were working on the press release to also watch this conference that was going on live through a website. They had different seminars and such at different times that day and we were in perfect timing for the last one of the day. It had to do with sexual assault and violence. What we heard was very interesting, but we only were able to hear bits and pieces because we were so focused on getting the press release done.

Day 11

Today when I came into the Clery Center, we were to send out the constant contact blast. This was so exciting for me. I do not know why because technically it is just sending out a mass email to all of the donors, sponsors and organizations that have signed up for the NCSAM toolkit so far. I guess it was because this was the first major thing that I worked on since starting at the Clery Center and it was being sent out to a whole bunch of people. So everyone would see all the hard work that was put into this event and thanking them as well.
Then for the rest of the day I continued to work on unfinished projects like the student group list and the media release.

Day 10

Today when I came in Amy and I had sent out the Constant Contact email blast that we have been working on. Thanking all of those organizations that have signed up already for this years NCSAM ( National Campus Safety Awareness Month) toolkit.  I spent more time today finishing up the Media Release for this years NCSAM. It mentions the other organizations that we have partnered up with and what the "Safe Campus, Strong Voices" campaign is all about.
The "Safe Campus, Strong Voices" Campaign is a nationwide campaign to raise awareness and shatter the silence on college sexual violence. To end the epidemic of sexual violence on universities, students and faculty, men and women, will work together to create safer and more supportive college campuses. So its important that we get this Media Release done and out there to help promote this campaign and NCSAM.

Day 9

I was not able to make it to the Clery Center today. I had another prior commitment before I got the internship that I was not able to get rescheduled. I spoke with Amy and Abby and they were completely fine with me not being able to make it because of a school commitment. They said that I would be able to make up the hours during my spring break like we had discussed during our first meeting when we signed the paper work.
They did however tell me that I could work on some projects that I was previously working on such as the student group list and since I got the email for the media/press release I could work on that so I would be able to get some hours in.

Day 8

When I walked today in they wanted to me to write up a Thank you letter to all of the organizations that have signed up for the NCSAM toolkit. So far we have 87 organizations, which is fantastic. I am using the website Constant Contact, which allows you to send mass emails out in a very professional form. They called it an email blast, kind of like when we get the GMC message alerts on the portal. This would be something that everyone got at the same time.
Constant contact is a really cool website. Amy showed me how to set everything up. How to change the pictures, write text, etc. When we were finished it looked like a flyer but it had a Thank You letter within it. So it was able to give the supporters an update and promote NCSAM at the same time. Also the woman in charge of the organization PAVE (Prevention. Awareness. Victim. Empowerment) created a wonderful video that we attached as well.
I found this useful because in any job there is the paper work aspect. You are always going to need to know how to communicate to others in a professional manner. So whether I am a therapist, a crisis hotline interventionist, guidance counselor, or continue to work in the non-profit feild this would be a much needed skill in the psychology field.

Day 7

Today Amy and Abby had to leave early, so they gave me work that I could do from home so I would not miss any hours this week. They had me continue to work on the Student organization list so that we could get more supporters. Also to get more organizations to be part of National Campus Safety Awareness Month. The more organizations that we have to get the word out the better.
Especially with big events like this and having it held on college campuses. Word of mouth is the biggest weapon that we have to getting students involved. Then I also was supposed to start working on a press release for NCSAM and the email never got to me. So I am assuming that is something that they decided would be better to work on in the office tomorrow, unless there is another project they want me to work on.

Day 6

Today was a very interesting day. When I came in Amy had me start making phone calls to the organizations on the student list we had been gathering together. She wanted me to use the transcript that I created the day before when speaking to the representative of the organization. The reason why were were calling these student organizations was because we wanted to reach out to them to see if they had heard of National Campus Safety Awareness Month (NCSAM).
If they had, we wanted to see what activities or events they had participated in and how they went. If they had not, we wanted to get them to sign up for the toolkit that would help them get started if they were interested in participating this year. A lot of the people that I needed to talk to were unavailable so I left messages on the machine. However, some of the people that I got to talk to were really helpful. One conversation I had with a girl was the head of a newspaper who puts their issues in bathroom stalls. That way they have a huge number of readers. She said that if the Clery Center was interested she would be happy to post an article in the paper so that NCSAM could be advertised in that area. I had some other  really good conversations as well and got some good information that will hopefully be used to further NCSAM and make it that much stronger.

Day 5

Today when I came in Amy had sent me an email earlier that day. It said that they wanted me to work on a transcript to call the organizations that we have been collecting for the student group list. So that when we call to see if they have been apart of NCSAM previously or if they wanted to be apart of it this year we knew exactly what to say to them. I found this very scary and useful at the same time. Scary because I had never written a transcript for a phone call before and because I did not want to give the people I was calling the wrong information. I know this may be a silly fact because of course Amy and Abbey would not even let me touch the phone without going over the transcript and making sure that I was comfortable enough to do it.
I felt that it was useful because in any profession you need to be able to communicate well with others and get your point across. Especially in the psychology field, all you do is communicate. Whether it be through the written word or word of mouth. This is a useful skill to have. This is what I worked on for the two hours that I was there and looked for more student groups to add to the list.

Day 4

Today when I came in I sent Abbey the feedback on the previous NCSAM toolkit. She said that she liked all the positive feedback, but that I should go back through and see if anything could be changed for the better. That I needed to look at it from a students point of view from going to campus events. That I should not be afraid to be critical because that is how programs such as NCSAM get improved over the years.
Then Abbey asked me if I could help think of ideas for the last 7 events in the 30 days 30 Activities part of the NCSAM toolkit. I have only come up with a few so far. Most of the ideas that I came up with were already taken. I am trying to think of things that GMC has done in the past that have worked and students really enjoyed. Hopefully by tomorrow I will have all 7 event ideas ready to present to Abbey.

Day 3

Today when I came in everyone was in the conference room having a meeting. When they saw coming up the stairs they all said hello and that I was welcome to come in and sit on the meeting if I was interested. Of course I said yes, went to put my stuff down and then went into the conference room with a pen and paper. Just in case I might have needed to write things down. It was an interesting meeting, everyone was going around the table and letting everyone know where they were with things and what things still needed to get done.
The biggest topic that dominated the conversation was NCSAM. NCSAM stands for National Campus Safety Awareness Month. It has been going on for the last six or more years. Amy explained that her, Abby and myself were all working on the toolkit and coming up with new exciting ideas for the program. As well as getting a sign-up to help get donors/sponsors for this year's NCSAM. I learned how to use Adobe InDesign, which is the program that they use in order to create documents for certain events.

Day 2

Today was a much interesting day then yesterday. Today I got here around 1 and Abby and Amy were in the middle of a small meeting. I went in and said hello. They explained that they were getting read to test drive and application for the PAVE company. PAVE stands for Promoting Awareness and Victim Empowerment.  The application is called Shatter the Silence. Since they are still creating the application for smart phones it needed to be looked over in order to get all of the kinks out.
We looked through all of the tabs and it appears to be a very useful tool for helping victims or in a crisis situation. It gives all the information that you could possibly need. We finished that at around three o'clock. It took us two hours to go through all of the information, however it was very helpful to me because I had never know how much time went into creating these smart phone applications.
Then once we were finished Abby had to leave for a reason that I can not remember.  But it was definitely important. Once Abby left Amy and I decided that it would be best for me to finish the task that I started yesterday. I only had a little to do and it would be helpful the sooner I got it done. I am learning a lot from reading all this information. I had no idea that there were so many areas where you could go for help or organizations that you could call that were dedicated to this cause and helping people.

Day 1

So for the first day of my internship, I met a few of the other interns. For some reason their names escape me, I will find out their names and type them in a later entry. Now back on track. Once I walked in the door and said hello it was time to work. Amy brought me to the room I was going to be working on and explained that she needed me to get familiarized with the NCSAM (National Campus Safety Awareness Month) program that was created for last year.
NCSAM NCSAM received the unanimous support of Congress in 2008. Each September, the Clery Center for Security On Campus partners with colleges, universities, and other agencies to offer campus safety programming.NCSAM received the unanimous support of Congress in 2008. Each September, the Clery Center for Security On Campus partners with colleges, universities, and other agencies to offer campus safety programming.
Then I was to create a word document or hand written account of what I thought of the program and if there are any changes that could be made in order to reach the students and schools better. Instead of hand writing it I decided to create a word document. Since I was only there for a couple of hours I spent the day reading all of the information and writing down any criticisms/thoughts I had about the program. Then I left and went home.
All in all I felt that it was a good two hours spent. I do wish that there had not been so much reading because it was a lot of information to process. However, since my title is development and outreach intern it is part of the job. Also since I am going to be helping create the program for NCSAM for this year it is important for me to get caught up so I am able to help in the planing.

Introduction

I am a senior at Gwynedd-Mercy College. As part of the psychology program we are required to keep a log or journal of some kind. With social media being all the rage I decided to create a blog and keep an online journal instead of a paper one. So, with that being said I figured that I would give a little bit of background information on the company that I will be working with for this internship.
For my internship I will be at The Clery Center for Security on Campus. It deals with violence on college campuses and helping to spread awareness, as well as making them safer for the students. I will be starting there next Tuesday, January 29th. I have not found out exactly what it is I will be doing just yet but Amy, my supervisor assures me that they will have a project for me when I come in on Tuesday at three o'clock. I think that this is going to be a really great experience for me and I can not wait to get started!
